The Al-Habis UNESCO Project

In this page

Al-Habis is a medieval Crusader fortress that rises above the famous archaeological city of Petra. Built around the year 1100, it played an important role in protecting the city and controlling access to the surrounding valleys. Today, Al-Habis is part of Petra’s UNESCO World Heritage Site and is an extraordinary place where history, landscape, and archaeology come together.

The UNESCO project at Al-Habis aims to protect this important site and make it safer and easier to visit, without changing its historical character. Over time, natural erosion, weather, and heavy use by visitors have damaged paths, stairways, and stone structures. This project addresses these problems while fully respecting the site’s original materials and appearance.

The main activities include stabilizing ancient stone structures, repairing stairways, and carefully repositioning fallen stones using traditional techniques. New walking paths and footbridges are being added where needed, designed to be reversible and visually discreet, so they do not disturb the landscape or the archaeological remains. Safety measures, such as protective railings in risky areas, are also being installed to help visitors move around the site more safely.

An important part of the project is the creation of a clear and safe trail connecting Al-Habis to nearby key monuments, such as Qasr al-Bint. This helps visitors understand how Al-Habis fits into the wider history of Petra and allows them to explore the area in a more organized and enjoyable way.

By combining conservation, safety, and education, the Al-Habis UNESCO project ensures that this remarkable fortress can be appreciated by future generations, while preserving its authenticity and historical value.
